Abstract

The study draws attention to the various interpretations of importance of the Learned Society of Malohont and its activities in publishing literature. It focuses mainly on Michal Steigel (1769 – 1829), the active member of the Learned Society of Malohont. The core of his work was published in the yearbook Solennia Bibliothecae Kishontanae. “The Speech about Causes of Coldness towards the Religion” (Řeč o příčinách studenosti k náboženství) is a remarkable work written in the contemporary form of Slovak language, in the spirit of individual criticism characteristic for the Enlightenment. It is reflection of an involved observer, a believer. Despite many critical, but also rational observations, Steigel considers religion to be the dominant principle and fundamental precondition for a happy life for every individual, and community as a whole. Insufficient piety, disrespect and ridicule of faith could lead to a threat to society as a whole. The work of this evangelical priest, erudite and versatile scholar, philosopher and writer mainly documents and reflects problems and phenomenon typical for the society at the turn of the 18th and 19th century in our territory.
