Abstract

Book production in Slovakia in the 18th century reflected the situation in European space,
which was moulded with the intentions of the ongoing Age of Enlightenment. Wolfgang
Johann von Kmepelen’s chess machine can be considered as a symbol of ongoing changes,
which focused on the systematic knowledge of natural laws and the possibilities of using
theory in practice. Karol Gottlieb Windisch was the first to write about the machine.
However, this work is only a short and not very important work in the publishing activities
of Windisch, in contrast to his other works, which dealt with geography, historiography
and politics of Hungary. Windisch’s publishing activity was rich. The article deals
with mapping of graphics mainly in his geographical works.
