Correspondence as one of the ways of communication gives us authentic personal statements, but can also bring subjectivity or personalization to one’s own thoughts and ideas. In the study, we will focus on the hidden and little explored aspect of informal communication, namely the correspondence of scholars in the context of the peregrination of their own, respectively their family members or those whom they supported on their way to education. The research problem is material documentation of concrete expressions of correspondence and exchange of information and knowledge among Hungarian scholars with Slovak roots both with scholars in the domestic environment and abroad, who were in relation to science, culture, politics, economy and education. Such research contributes to the knowledge of scientific and cultural transfers and verifies the hypothesis of integrating the scholar community from the territory of present Slovakia into wider scholar networks. It also verifies the forms of their maintenance and development and registers and keeps evidence of these processes. It contributes to the knowledge of intellectual communication and transfers at both national and international levels, as the reflection of scholarly activities is still subject to stereotyped interpretations (the underdevelopment of communication infrastructures, the absence of scientific centres, etc.), which appear to be unfounded in deeper examination.

Through the correspondence of prominent personalities who have significantly influenced cultural, social, scientific and political backgrounds, we have focused on the 1500 – 1800 period which provides a look into the world of this period and brings new insights into the emergence, expansion and impact of scholars´ thoughts both in the domestic and European contexts.

In general, from the letters of the Modern Age, we receive various types of information, and we can look at them from several aspects such as, the aspect of contacts, the political situation of the period, private information, the actual delivery of correspondence, but also from the aspect of education.

In selecting correspondence on our subject, we have focused mainly on this aspect and the aspect of peregrination itself. The corpus of almost two hundred letters of Slovak scholars and prominent well-known and less known persons of cultural, social, literary and scientific life has provided us with interesting material for the analysis of this topic. We looked at the peregrination and its reflection in these letters from a chronological point of view and we have found groups of correspondence that clarified the whole process of peregrination from its planning to return home. For this occasion, we have chosen the theme of preparation for peregrination, the university travel itself and the support of students at the university, and in this sense we also designed a contribution sequence.

The main points of the present study are the survey of universities, requesting references, respectively travel guide recommendations (at least the correspondence support), respectively intervention with famous personalities in universities and moral and financial support of students from Slovakia in foreign universities which is documented in correspondence.
