Some schools in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire started to issue a sort of annual reports at the end of the 18th century. These short reports consisted of „Klassenzettel“, which was a list of students and their study results. After 1849 issuing the annual reports started to be compulsory and their publication, including the compulsory parts, was restricted by law. The main and most interesting part of the reports started to appear; schools had to include a study written by a school teacher. During the 1st World War, there was another restriction that the school reports had to be as short as possible due to the paper shortage in the whole empire. Most of the schools issued their reports until the year 1938 or 1939. Not many schools renewed the tradition after 1945.Those who did keep it only for a few years. In 1948 another school reform came. The schools were often transformed into a different type of school.
